Don Juan on trial
[La nuit de Valogne]by Eric Emmanuel Schmitt
Director Marco Romero
Producer Michael Bula
The production
A crumbling château — the Duchess mysteriously calls together a number of women for a special soirée. All are strangers with one uniting thread — Don Juan ! … a night of drama and revenge …
First-time professional Chilean director, Marco Romero, brought to life this MFT première of a new psychological take on the ageless Don Juan character.
This was an ambitious production with live theatre music performed by Heidi Bula with a backdrop of candles and an innovative video-projected set.

A bearded [!] Damien Kenny was exquisite as Don Juan and seconded by the inimitable Marc Buret as Sganarelle. First-time actor Fabrice Chatain brought true pathos to the Chevalier de Chiffreville. Catherine Jackson-Grose was the chef d’orchestre of the trial in her crumbling Normandy chateau and played La Duchesse. With her, Catherine Blanchy as Mademoiselle de la Tringle, Ana Gonzales, the unforgettable nun Hortense Hauteclaire, Rachel Audigé as La Comtesse and Séverine Roman as Madame Cassin, all shared a common past unbeknownst to each of them. They were the victims of Don Juan. Lilia Kessouar played the Duchess’s maid Marion and Magali Berquand, the latest victim was Angélique de Chiffreville, her goddaughter and niece.

Thank you very much for inviting us, the Honorary Consulate team, to the gala evening of the MFTC last Friday. We thoroughly enjoyed the play, and had a very pleasant evening. You deserve to be supported and commanded for the devotion you have put in the French Theatre over the last 35 years, it requires a special person to be the soul and the energy behind a French speaking Theatre in Melbourne! We look forward to the next production and will keep trying to help you as much as possible.
